about

An excerpt from Raymond Harris' novel "Heaven", published by Grove Press, edited by Olivia Szenes.

lyrics

Calm down and tell me slowly,
I want to hear each and every word.
Fleeting, frail, and lowly--
Shrill, shallowed, and slurred.

Your face was fixed on my face.
With frozen eyes, she stared at me.
Intense like a child I coveted
The way she once looked at me.

"You can have my shame,
but nothing else..."

Eyes pitiful, she looked away.
Pallor paled, she wept in dismay.
Fists clenched, she pounded in time.
Hands exhausted, she pardoned my crime.

"It's all too human to lie...
It's all too human to look away."

The more you struggle, the tighter the constraints.
The more you ignore me, the louder my complaints.
The more you detach, the more I am involved.
The more you are settled, the more I am unresolved.

"You can have my shame,
but nothing else..."
